Allianz Richmond Marathon

RVA runs on fun

As a runner myself, I was pretty pumped to get the opportunity to design finisher merch for “America's Friendliest Marathon.”

I wanted to focus on the trip through the city that you take along the route from start to finish — while highlighting landmarks and emphasizing the race’s famous downhill finish. It’s pretty amazing how many runners take part in this race series, and the support from the crowd is just as amazing.

The design suite featured 3 colorways for each race — the 8k, the half, and the full marathon. We do it for the brunch!

Down and back with style

Shortly after I wrapped design on the Richmond Marathon kit, I was approached again by Sports Backers to work on the T-shirts and medal design for another iconic Richmond race — the Monument Avenue 10k.

While 6.2 miles is nothing to laugh at, this race is almost like a 3.1 mile block party. There are bands at almost every intersection and the median that runs down the center of the road is always packed with energetic fans. We wanted to focus on bright, cheery colors while basing imagery on the signature turn at the top of the course and pulling from Virginia’s state flower. It even made the local news!

“We were thrilled to work with Frank Anderson—it’s great to have a local designer familiar with the event. He was able to capture the spirit of race day in commemorative items that people will enjoy for years to come.”
